The Ballad of an amateur Necromancer
The Ballad of an amateur Necromancer
Chapter 1: License to Necromance
A pale beam of light shone through the cracked roof of the mausoleum and descended upon the cold concrete floor. Full moon.. Excessum thought to himself. Raising his hand to his face, Excessum coughed briefly into the gloved palm of his hand.
"Can't stand bone dust," he muttered to himself.
A short grunt came from him as he rose off of the floor, and rose to his feet. He stepped over to a warped, wooden shelf and took his staff and cloak off and attached his cloak to his back. Ragged an worn the cloak fit in perfectly for a Necromancer's decor. As he walked towards the entrance, he caught his eye upon three mysterious figures.
He cautiously took three steps back and looked outside at the dark, lonesome graveyard.
"You sure this the right place?" one of the figures said
"You callin' me stupid?" the other replied.
"No, I was just-".
"Shut up the both of you! You want the Necromancer to know we're here?".
Oh, wonderful Excessum thought, Adventurers He cracked his bony knuckles, and gently tapped the floor with his staff. Soon after, three coffin lids were push off, and three Skeletons all arose, and stood dully at attention. Excessum gently caressed his chin and said, "Take care of our guests, if you would be so kind," They all took hold of a rusted, poor quality sword and marched out the door. As soon as the skeletons met with the Adventurers, it was over quickly.
One figure, obviously and Berserker, crushed one into pieces under the blunt of his war hammer. The other a Mage, and seemingly a powerful one, blasted the second skeleton to pieces with a fire ball. And finally, the third Adventurer blew the last skeleton to pieces with a brilliant ball of light. Excessum sighed deeply, he truly was an amateur Necromancer. He began to flee out the front door, panting at an alarming rate. He felt his feet freeze to the ground, engulfed in a block of Magic ice. He began to panic as he saw the Berserker approach. He drastically pulled at his legs to no prevail. The Berserker raised his great hammer above his head, and grinned. But just before the great blow was laid, the Adventurer was smacked by some great force.
He landed, crashed more like it, against a tomb stone, knocking him unconscious. Excessum soon saw what had hit the Berserker. Oh no Excessum thought Not him... A large undead carrying a spear of giant proportions continued on its onslaught, destroying each Adventurer as if it were nothing. Soon, the ice at Excessum's feet began to metal away, but he felt the shame of defeat, colder than any ice a Mage could produce. He fell to his knees, and a second Necromancer approached him. The Second Necromancer began laughing hysterically at the pathetic position of Excessum.
"You couldn't handle yourself against a Zard man let alone, three Adventurers, ay Skelly?"
Excessum cringed at his words, he didn't need to be reminded of his position.
"Its Excessum Noxus." he spat back.
"Not from what I hear, I heard that they stripped you of your Necromancer name." Noxus returned.
It was true, after repeated failure, Excessum was stripped of his offical Necromancer title, and had to bear his old name, but chose to keep Excessum anyway.
"What are you doing here," Excessum said coldly.
" To get you, the Necromancing Society has banned the trade of free lance Necromancing, you are embarrassing yourself, and the council." Noxus replied to him.
"So there for, your mausoleum has received an eviction notice, and you must return your Soul Gem."
Excessum's eyes widened, "My Soul Gem?" he stuttered out.
"Yes Skeleton, your Gem, and you get the pleasure of having your Spirit extracted into it as a gift for its new owner."
Excessum, or as Noxus calls him, Skeleton felt terror run through him.
"Fine," Excessum spat back, "lets get this over with."
"Very well," Noxus said.
As they entered, Excessum picked up his staff, which at the head, held his Soul Gem. And instead of handing it to Noxus, he smacked Noxus over the head with it. Noxus's undead giant quickly came to attention, and charged at the mausoleum. Excessum quickly casted a curse that brought the creature to its knees. Even a failure like Excessum could cast something as simple as Over rule, (Over Rule:-A basic Necromancer spell that can take control of a free walking undead, or more commonly, take control of another Necromancer's undead.) Excessum grinned, and took one of the Adventurer's horses that they left at the gate, and road off into the night. Excessum's eyes tightened, now all he had to do was make it to Hero Shire.
Chapter 2: Book Shopping
Thunder boomed, and lightning quickly illuminated the sky in a bright brilliant flash. Excessum held a straight face as he endured the pounding rain upon his head. He continued trucking through the overflowing streets of Hero Shire towards the local Inn. Through the cracks of the curtains he could see bright light that only a warm fire could produce. His morale raised just at the mere thought of a refreshing warmth of a fire. When Excessum reached the heavy wooden door of the Inn he briefly knocked on the door in a quick succession. An eye slot was roughly slid open and a pair of eyes stared angrily at Excessum.
"What do you what?" said a heavily accented man from inside.
"I'm just looking for a place to stay for the night." Excessum replied.
The man at the door groaned and said back to him with an extra amount of pleasure,
"We're pretty full 'ere mate, its a mighty high price to stay tonight,"
Excessum held up a heavily weighted down bag in front of the man's view.
"I think I can handle your prices," he coolly said.
The man, obviously realizing what the sack was, quickly opened the heavily locked door. Excessum felt the warm air rush over his body and heard the loud chatter of the other customers. Excessum paid the door man, and hung up his cold, wet jacket and cloak. The burly door man slammed the door and said,
"Welcome to the Hog's Nose Inn!"
Hog's Nose? Excessum thought Where do they come up with these names?. He quickly took up one of the open chairs by the fire. He felt the relief of a warm fire rush over him as he began to sink into the new environment.
I escaped Noxus this time, Excessum thought But its only a matter of time
As Excessum began to ponder his options on what to do next, his ear happened upon a most interesting conversation. It was two Mages in two other chairs by the fire in a deep conversation.
"What do you mean gone?" the first exclaimed (as quietly as possible). This one was an older Mage, with a long white beard.
"It was stolen by some Dark Mage, a powerful one at that." the second said back, a young Mage with a neat, blond hair cut.
Dark Mage, Excessum thought Why can't they just say Necromancer those pompous, high and mighty...
"We can't let this knowledge escape to the public," the first Mage said.
"Agreed," the second replied "I will send you a letter with the details in 3 days."
"Very well then," the first Mage grunted while beginning to stand "I'm off to bed,"
"I'll follow soon after," the second Mage replied.
About 2 hours after the first Mage had gone to bed, the second soon decided to actually go to his room. He traveled up the steps to the second floor where his room was obviously held. In the hardly lit hall ways of the Hog's Nose, Excessum silently, and casually followed the Mage. When the moment was right Excessum lifted up his palm in a casting motion. Before the Mage could retaliate, Excessum had already casted Dimensia (Dimensia:- An amateur Necromancer curse, the spell causes the target to fall into a half wake, half sleeping state. It is more commonly used for interrogation do to the fact that it makes people more willing to reveal personal topics.). Excessum smiled sinisterly. He approached the Mage to begin his interrogation.
"Do tell me, what were you talking of before to your Mage friend,"
Excessum smoothly said.
The Mage's eyes twitched before he mumbled, "The ArchMage's library was robbed. A special tome was taken."
Excessum's eyes narrowed, this was big. No one, at least no one without great skill, could break into the ArchMage's library, and get away.
"Alright," Excessum continued, "What tome was taken,"
The Mage appeared to have an internal struggle, the spell was breaking. But finally he cracked under the spell's power.
"The Grimoire," the Mage sputtered
Even the candle's flickered at the very name of this tome. Excessum couldn't believe it. The Grimoire holds every Necromancer spell known to man, it even fills in new ones when they are created. It also holds power strong enough for a Necromancer to cast every spell in the book, so the more entries, the more power. It held the reputation of the heaviest guarded tome of all time, it took real strength to break that out. So now that it was out, Excessum could take it for his own! With the tome he could be accepted back into the Necromancing society, and even became of a Council Member. The Mage began to change in breathing patterns, and twitching a little bit more. The spell wouldn't hold much longer.
"Last question," Excessum said "Who has it?"
At this, the hardly conscious Mage smiled.
"Well?" Excessum impatiently said.
The Mage spoke a word that brought emptiness and despair to his heart.
"Sepulchure."
